Album Description Jupiters Darling features 16 sweet rocking tunes by the sisters of Heart. Led by siblings Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart struck a crucial blow for feminisim in the male-dominated world of '70s rock. They could switch from powerful, Zeppelin-like grandeur to gorgeous acoustic ballads in the blink of an eye and turned out a stream of radio staples. By the '80s, they were churning out slick pop, but the sisters re-emerged in the '90s in stripped-down acoustic duo format as the Lovemongers.

NOT A MASTERPIECE, BUT STILL QUITE ENJOYABLE May 3, 2010 D. Snyder (Salem Oregon) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Musically, I find this album highly refreshing after their 80's over synthed, over produced material. While Heart has never been one of my favorite bands, I do enjoy them, and they do know how to rock. I can also understand how some people would not like this material much, especially the fans of Heart from the 80's. I found the 80's stuff to be their most uninspiring work (but then I see the 80's over all as a pretty uninspiring time in music). musically speaking, I find this much closer to there seventies material throughout much of the album, but it does stand alone in their discography as being unique. This, I think, is what some fans find disappointing, as this is not really Heart as they have ever sounded before. I can see how this could be referred to as a return to the seventies material, but to me it sounds quite different from the seventies material too. Personally, I found it interesting to hear them try out some new music styles. Musically I would want to give this one 3.5 to 4 stars, but...
Lyrically, I do have to agree with the people who found this uninspiring. A few of the songs are chocked so full of cliches that they got a little annoying for me. While I have mostly enjoyed Heart over the years for there music and have never thought of their lyrics as very deep and thought provoking, some of these lyrics could and should have been a little more thoughtfully penned.
That being said, I appreciate Anne and Nancy's work in the rock and roll industry. Their voices are still very good on this record, and I strongly disagree with the nay sayers who say otherwise. Clearly on this album they were experimenting with a new direction that they hadn't really gone up to this point. I, for one, would have been disappointed if they had tried to simply rehash their 70's sound. Don't come to this record expecting them to sound anything like they did on Heart, Bad Animals, or Brigade. Finally,I think most people who have enjoyed Heart in the past would enjoy this one as well, especially if they don't have too many preconceived notions of what the band should sound like.
And to Anne and Nancy I would like to say, keep being true to yourself, and I'll keep on listening.
P.S. I just want to add that I am aware that there was some great music coming out of the 80's (U2-The Joshua Tree and Dire Straits-Brother's in Arms readily come to mind). The point I was making about the 80's is that in my opinion the soul was often sucked out of music with overly slick production and technology often running out of control with synthesizers seemingly taking over the music industry. I can appreciate Anne and Nancy's vocals from every era; they are fantastic, but I am so thankful that they have gone away from the synthesizers.
Major Disappointment ! January 30, 2010 Heart Fan (NYC , NY) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's been a long time since their last album, and "Jupiter's Darling" just doesn't measure up to the standards this great band had set for itself.
Quelle surprise!! October 25, 2008 G. Young (Talent, OR United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's been four years since Heart released "Jupiter's Darling" and I am just now beginning to REALLY listen to it (my time's been taken up listening to "Hope & Glory", but that's for another review). I have been a fan of Heart since I was 16 and they released "Dreamboat Annie"...(do the math and you'll know how old I am!) If anything, the Wilson sisters have matured with age, like a fine wine, and they prove it on this CD. Both are in excellent form as songwriters/lyricists and still sing as beautifully as ever...they're also living proof that life doesn't end at 50...you go girls...This CD has caused me to remember good times in high school and college, but is totally relevant to my life today. They're also making it easier for many of us to transition into middle age...entering middle age is a beginning, not the beginning of the end. These women rock and I look forward to the next installment in their oeuvre, even if I have to wait 11 years!! Isn't being a Baby Boomer excellent?

Pretty Impressive June 26, 2008 Bradley Jacobson 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Opening with a rousing acoustic guitar, you are ready to hear the old world winds of "Magic Man" as Ann kicks in to sing, alas it's not "Magic Man" but for the sisters who have been making power packed rock since 1976, this is still a really welcome comeback.
At 16 songs, the power and passion that is the Wilson sisters can end up being a little intimidating but for anyone who ever sang along with the likes of "Barracuda" or even "Dreamboat Annie", Jupiter's Darling is a great place to go. Ann proves she hasn't lost a bit of her vocal chops as she punches through "Make You" and then takes it down four notches for "The Perfect Goodbye", and ever since she proved what she can do on a lead with 1985's "These Dreams" Nancy (Mrs. Cameron Crowe if you're nasty) gets a few songs of her own, most notably on the acoustic "Things".
